My Journey from Adversarial to Redemptive Advocacy
My Mission
A Forty-Year Journey of Legal Practice, Personal Transformation, and Purpose
My name is Souder Tate. For decades, I practiced law the way I was taught — focused on the law and the facts of the case. But over time, I saw what the system often missed: the human story behind the charge. My years of working with people in recovery reshaped everything. Today, I use my legal expertise to help clients rebuild their lives with dignity, clarity, and hope.
My Perspective
My perspective began to fundamentally shift in 2009 through my work with Missouri’s drug courts. On the front lines, I saw the critical importance of looking beyond the charge itself. I learned to identify and address the complex web of responsivity, criminogenic, and maintenance needs — the specific factors and life circumstances that lead people into contact with the justice system. That shift changed how I practice law, and why.
The Turning Point
But the true turning point came years later. Around 2014, I began speaking at treatment court conferences across the country. In preparing for those talks — and listening to others — I saw the undeniable connection between a person’s behavior and their history of childhood trauma, mental health struggles, and substance use.
I realized that the most powerful, overlooked piece of evidence in any case is the story clients tell themselves.
I realized that the most powerful, overlooked piece of evidence in any case was the story clients tell themselves.
A New Approach to Criminal Defense
I founded Bard Legal to put that realization into practice. I knew I had to create a firm that didn’t just ask, “What did you do?” — but had the courage to ask, “Why did it happen?”
This is the heart of redemptive defense. It’s a practice built not on excuses, but on explanations. I use a trauma-informed approach and my unique Sentencing Map℠ process to uncover and articulate your full story. We present a complete picture to the court — one that provides context, demonstrates character, and builds a powerful case for a second chance.
This isn’t just a philosophy; it’s a structured, evidence-based method for changing the narrative. It’s about facing challenges head-on, armed with a clear strategy and a fearless advocate.
